Question:

Will I notice a significant difference in acceptance of my homosexuality in college than I do now in HS?

I know it depends on the college that I go to, but I have been told that college students are generally more tolerant, or at least they don't make a big deal out of it. Is this true?

  1. I have found this true. I have been to two different colleges and both have been tolerant and mind their own business. Hang in there. Check out your colleges before you apply to see what the student life is like.

  2. I guess it's because college students really don't give a c**p. People in high school are judgmental to the max and if someone did anything out of the norm it was like OH NOOO [in the h.s I went to anyway] College students are like oh your g*y/L*****n/bi ? Great. End of convo.

  3. AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT GOING TO WYOMING!

  4. In my experience in college, people have been so much more tolerant and accepting of others, not to mention much more mature.

  5. Thanks for asking this. I was wondering the same thing since I would be starting college pretty soon. High school for me was a nightmare so I'm looking forward to the change.

  6. There is a significant change in the attitudes of students once they enter college.  Their minds are being introduced to ideas that go beyond what they saw in their own little corner of the world during high school, also they are not living with their parents, and that does have a huge affect on how a student, or teen, or even a young adult, will think.  Also, like you said, it will depend upon where you go, but there is so much more tolerance on campuses nowadays that you may find support groups on campus or in the city/town it is in.  Good Luck!

  7. mhm

  8. no one cares what you are. Only if you flaunt it and try to press it on others.

  9. Huge difference.  Just make sure you go to a school with a large g*y/L*****n population and support system.  Hate crimes still do exist and you have to be safe, too.

Also, in college, no matter what you do - people don't make it their business as much.  You will have more of your "own" life and you won't have so much pressure to conform.

  10. yes, most college students tend to be more tolerant and mature about this subject. We all go to college to learn and discover more about the world. And whether they like it or not L*****n and g*y people are part of this world, so most accept it as it is.

  11. Absolutely.  Of course, it depends on which college...but college tends to be a lot more open-minded because the people who go there are educated well...unlike in high school.

You'll be fine!  Trust me, you'll meet a lot of g*y people.

  12. I'm going to say Probably... you want to go someplace liberal...

    NOT like Texas A&M...

  13. Yes. College is a very liberal place these days, professors are almost all liberals, people are much more open-minded about things, and nobody cares what you are, they care about who you are. High School is all about being popular and rich, whereas college is all about going out and being yourself, away from family. Its your time to truly open up and be who you are. You will find that theres very few people in college who care about homosexuality. College students are much more tolerant to just about everything. Hang in there, it gets better.

  14. Perhaps. You might even get some advances from curious straight guys but I'd be careful with those.

In high school, it's usually people from the same small community and everyone's still immature and believes what mommy and daddy and mister preacher man tells them. In college, you get to meet a wider range of people and people in general are starting to grow up more. You'd sill get your homophones though but you'll find more people who stand up against them than with them than in high school.

  15. Absolutely true.  In college things are so much different than in high school.  It really shouldn't be a big issue for you in college, though it would probably help if you knew your roommate rather than going in blind.

  16. there's a lot more exposure in college than high school, and high school students are so immature. you'll be fine.

  17. Yes, most likely.

  18. fewer people care because its bigger

  19. College students are more mature than high school students. So nothing to worry about.

  20. I've heard it's way more different and accepting.

  21. Colleges are considerably 'more intellectual' and 'more tolerant'... but, that is NOT to say that you won't meet people who aren't 'more intelligent' or 'more tolerant' because there will some of those too...  Most people who are going to college are far too busy to pay too much attention to the 'lives' of others or to get involved in 'harassing' others...unfortunately some of that cannot be said for 'parochial' institutions...

  22. yes, people will be more mature and tolerant;)
