  1. The rules state, if the opportunity was open to you to purchase a ticket, from a ticket machine, ticket office or permit to travel machine BEFORE travel, then there is no problem, however if you decide to join a service without paying, then depending on the company you are liable to a FULL standard (Peak) single fare to your destination without discounts (you will have to buy another single ticket to get back) or a Penalty fare of £20 (average) to the next station and then a full standard fare to the destination, or double the standard single to the destination, whichever is the greater.  If you board a service that does not have any ticket purchasing facilities, then YOU must seek out the Conductor / Gaurd / Train Manager and offer to pay a ticket as quickly as possible before you take a seat on the service (That is classed as attempting to avoid payment), if no ticket selling facilities are availiable on the train, then an excess fare should be brought at your destination.

If a Ticket Inspector / Revenue Protection Officer catches you they also have the option of detaining you with the authority of Arrest, or taking details to pass on to the Cime Units where a court summons could be issued leading to a maximum penalty of £2000 plus costs for Fare avoidance (normally used for fraud or people who continually avoid the fare), in whatever case the Inspector will have a record of your failure to purchase ticket, which is kept on file and checked each time a Penalty is given.

Each TOC has a differing policy on how it treats people on train without a ticket, you should check with your local TOC as to there own policy (ask the staff normally as the company will give you the offical blurb)

    Hope this helps.

  2. Unless you manage to say that you got on the train at the last stop, ie bunk it until you get caught.

No there is no difference in the price on the train or off

  3. Ticket prices are the same but you might also get a penalty fare for not having a ticket in the first place before boarding the train

  4. Usually the train staff can only issue a ticket at the full standard rate, and not apply the multitudinous discounts etc you can get over the counter.

  5. usually,

let the conductor know that you almost missed your train and didn't have time to buy a ticket

  6. It depends on the rail network, but with some you will be charged much more on the train.

Being a student, I have a young persons railcard (even at the ripe old age of 25!) and can thus get a return from Manchester to London for £41 at the counter or online in advance.  On the train itself, I can only buy a standard single which costs over £100.

You nearly always save by buying in advance.

    Hope this helps!

  7. If you're riding the NJ transit trains and there was a ticket machine at the station where you got on, you'll be charged an extra $5 to buy the ticket on the train. Machines at the stations take cash, debit and credit cards.

  8. it depends on the system and if the ticket counter was open at the time (this is for Amtrak

if there is no station or the station is closed at the time of the train departure then you can buy the ticket from the conductor

    on the train

if the ticket window was open again you can buy the ticket

from the conductor but might be charged a small surcharge

fee (although I had heard some times the conductor can forgive

the fee (if you told him/her you where afraid you would miss the train (and there was a long line at the ticket window)

    now this works for Amtrak

but it wont work for commuter rail lines  (Metrolink for excample0(like where you buy your ticket from a ticket vending machine)

  9. Possibly not. The ticket inspectors on the train tend to charge you the peak time rate of the ticket so, it could end up costing you more.
