I have to do a track run for tryouts and I was wondering if I will run faster on the track than I do in my neighborhood which has a lot of hills. If I will run any faster, about how much faster would it be for a mile and a 1/2?

  1. Yes, going up hills requires extra energy. A track is flat so you should be able to run faster. The difference probably will not be that drastic it isn't falling by 5:00 minutes. But I'd guess you might cut time off by 30  to 1:00.

  2. Of course, I live in a hilly neighborhood myself, and whenever my run goes from hilly to flat, I feel faster. I would say around 2-3 minutes faster is a good estimate

  3. Yes, you run faster on flat ground than on hills. HOWEVER, I would suggest you train on the hills, because it builds muscles better and faster, so you can be even faster on the track.

  4. Because you have to work harder to make it up the hill you wont run as fast but when you're on a flat serface you don't have to work as hard so you can put that energy into running faster then trying to go up a hill.

  5. Yes

  6. Yes, but the amount cannot be easily determined, even if one had numerical topography of your hilly course.  You will go somewhat faster downhill, but lose all the time, and more, on the uphill portions.
