Will I save gas by putting it in neutral at stoplights?

What about going down hills?

  1. If you want to save gas, you basically need to:

    -  accelerate smoothly

    -  when you've hit your max desired speed, don't press on the gas pedal anymore.  basically, pressing on the gas pedal will use gas.

When going down hills, your car naturally speeds up due to gravity, so you don't need to push the gas pedal.

  2. Neither will save gas.

At stoplight whether in neutral or not the injection system will flow enough gas to sustain idle, in neutral your idle speed will be higher without the load of the torque converter.

Going down hill if you put the transmission in neutral fuel will be injected to maintain idle, if you leave it in Drive no fuel is injected as the engine speed is maintained by the drive line. The only time you would gain some mileage is if you turned the engine off driving downhill, but this is very dangerous as you would not have power brakes, and power steering and risk locking up your steering column.

  3. nope, The reason for this is that all neutral does is disconnect the wheels from the engine via the transmission. So, the engine will still be running at the same speed (and therefore using the same amount of fuel), but will have absolutely no effect on the wheels

  4. NOPE the engine is running and that is what wastes gas..

You can sit idle in a parking lot and waste gas...

If you are driving long distance your best bet is to set your cruise control it saves you a lot on gas

  5. Yeah you will a bit but its not worth it. Its illegal to coast in almost all states so if you get caught you'll have to pay a fine which is way more than the gas.

It can save some fuel (little bit) if you did.  But that is also like getting your car towed.  It is extremely bad for your tranny.

    Good Luck...

  7. It does save gas - not a whole lot, but yes it does. I don't use it because it's just too much work for only a few cents a gallon.

  8. It's not really worth that much savings in gas versus the hundreds to thousands of dollars you will be spending on a new transmission from all the constant shifting.

Each time you shift into drive from neutral in an automatic you are causing friction and heat from the clutch and both of these will break down a transmission very quickly. In your question you would be causing unnecessarily excessive heat and friction to save a buck or two a week.

A few easily forgettable ways to save MPG's?

    - Check and maintain proper tire pressure.

    - Don't use your AC in your car, roll down the windows.

    - Don't speed. Keep it at 55 mph or under!

  9. if you have an automatic don't do it,  its rough on the shifter thing to do it unnecessarily.  best just to take your foot off the gas.

if you have a manual, go for it! it will prolly help a little bit.

best advice is go way easy on your accelerations.  also if you know your going to have to stop at a light or turn, take ur foot off the gas way in advance and just slow down with out using the break until necessary.
