I'm going to be a sophomore in high school this year. I played volleyball on the varsity team last year as a freshman. I didn't start last year, our three seniors (2 outside hitters and a setter) and three sophomores (2 middle hitters and a setter) were our starters. This year our team will consist of this (I'll use initials for names of the players)

MD - middle hitter/DS (junior)

SJ - setter (junior)

LO - setter/libero (sophomore)

KC - back row (sophomore)

TB - back row (sophomore) deff won't start

OL - outside hitter/back row (senior) deff won't start

AB - right side/weak side hitter (junior)

EC - outside hitter (sophomore)

MM - middle hitter (junior)

Me - outside hitter/back row (sophomore)

And then other freshmen but none of them will start.

I can serve, pass and dig REALLY well and hit with really good ball positioning. I know for sure that AB, SJ, MM, and MD will start. Do I have a chance of starting? My private coach said my coach would be crazy not to start me.

  1. If you are constantly improving then there is no reason for your coach not to start you.  My coach didn't start me in my freshman yr but i was a starter in my sophmore year.  Stay with a positive attitude and never let your coach see that your discouraged because you haven't started because it will make her think that you aren't happy with her decisions.  You can still help your team throughout the bench by cheering them on and lifting up their spirits when they are dead.  Just hang on and you'll start in no time!

  2. just keep working hard and do your best I moved up and played varsity in 9th grade and started as a sophomore and now im captain.

    Good Luck

  3. Sounds like your on the right track....only downfall is your height...but you seem to have everything coverd. If your good at pass receive I cant see why your coach wouldn't start you on the outside. That being said...he could have a favor taller guys. You might have a better shot at being the libero, but your going to have to beat out LO.

Good luck....your doing all the right things.
