they may try if israel or the us attacks  i think the us navy will be able to keep the strait open  but the effect on oil prices will be awfull

If we attack them, they might try.  However, with the two carrier groups currently in place in the region, they would be reopened in short order.  Then it would be a question of whether they decide to carry out sabotage or create other environmental disasters to "clog" the Gulf traffic.

If they do, it won't have the effect you think.  Iran accounted for about 8% of 2007 production, though about 12% of reserves.  Regardless of Saudi Arabia, the 800 lb gorilla, Kuwait and UAE have reserves whose withdrawal could be accelerated to compensate.  Not to mention Russia and ANWR, always wild cards to play.

No, the U.S. will NEVER allow the Strait of Hormuz to be closed.  We have a huge naval buildup in the Persian Gulf, and their job would be to keep it open, which they could do easily.

America has more oil than they do. We just haven't tapped into it. Look up Colorado or Montana Oil Reserves.... it's crazy how much we have at our finger tips that we haven't even drilled for... and we just sit and watch us fail.

If they do cut off oil supply it's not going to do anything, but hurt their country.
