Will Jefferson to stay with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Leicestershire-c807
Opening batsman Will Jefferson has signed a two-year contract, which will keep him at Grace Road until the end of the 2012 domestic season.
"I am delighted to have a spring in my step again. I thoroughly enjoyed the cricket I played in 2010. I fully believe that, after riding one of the most difficult periods in the club's history [a row over
the position of the county's chairman], the squad, thanks largely to Matthew's Hoggard's leadership and full belief in his players, have become a stronger group," he said.
Jefferson staying on with the county is very important because he is a highly unique player. The 31-year-old hit a total of 722 runs last season
and will be looking to top the 1,000 mark in division two of the county championship next year. He follows teammate Jacques du Toit in committing his future to the club. It's now very likely that
Jefferson will see out the rest of his career at Leicestershire.
An important signature
Jefferson's signature is very important because he offers something different. At 6ft 10 in tall Jefferson is a very intimidating batsman to play against, which can put some bowlers off their game before
a ball has been bowled.
Jefferson has a first-class average of 36.22, which will rival the majority of opening batsmen in the second division of the four-day game. He's scored 14 first-class centuries that shows he can play a
long innings at vital times.
It's important the club keeps key players in place after the row within the club over the summer. The saga of club captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Matthew-Hoggard-c1926 and head coach Tim Boon asking former chairman Neil Davidson to
resign has left a negative feeling around the club. No one would have blamed Jefferson for walking away.
"I look forward to being at the forefront of the club's future success, while mounting a claim to achieve my burning ambition of higher honours again," he added.
