Will Juan Martin Del Potro ever solve a puzzle of Roger Federer? – Tennis Special
World number eight, Juan Martin Del Potro, is the revitalized sensation of men’s tennis especially after his majestic triumph over the second ranked Serb superstar, Novak Djokovic, for a bronze medal at the London Olympics.
He almost made it through to the final showdown but the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, held his nerves and won a three-setter from a set down stage lasting over four hours. The last set went to 19-17 before the 23-year-old Argentine
warrior bowed down to the future Hall of Famer.
Del Potro is the hot talk at the moment and he is definitely going to climb up the world rankings; not staying at the world number eight for sure. He is a former world number four and he is probably good enough to challenge the
spot again and dethrone the Top-4 superstars; Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, who have been exchanging their ranks with their arch rivals.
The Argentine hard-hitter commenced the season as the top seed superstar in the Apia Sydney International but lost in the quarter-finals to the recently married Cypriot tennis icon, Marcos Baghdatis. He reached the quarter-final
stage of the Australian Open at Melbourne but fell victim to the same old Swiss superstar, Roger Federer.
In the ABN AMRO event at Rotterdam, Federer stood in the way of Del Potro and the title for the second time in the season. Finally, the breakthrough tournament for the Argentine arrived in Marseille when he lifted the trophy of
Open 13 after beating the solid left-handed local superstar, Michael Llodra.
However, he still remained the second best in the contest with the Swiss legend as he crashed out of the Dubai Duty Free Championships in the semi-final stage. For the fourth straight time, Del Potro lost to Federer in the quarter-final
of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. It has become a routine for the Argentine superstar to inch immensely close to a victory before bowing out to the Swiss Maestro.
Sony Ericsson Open at Miami was a tough tournament for the right-handed Argentine as he was handed a strong draw throughout where he reached the fourth round but was ousted by the Spanish number two, David Ferrer. However, the
second title for the immensely talented Argentine came in Portugal when he defeated the second seed French star, Richard Gasquet, to lift the Estoril Open crown.
Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France ended Del Potro’s run in the semi-final of Madrid Open and the third round of Italian Open respectively. In the Roland Garros French Open, Federer again fought back
a double set down to oust the ninth seed Argentine in the quarter-finals. It was the fifth straight loss for the Argentine superstar at the hands of Federer.
David Ferrer stopped Del Potro in the fourth round of Wimbledon and for the sixth time Federer edged the Argentine 3-6, 7-6(5), 19-17 in the semi-final of London Olympics. Del Potro is inching a step closer every time and probably
the next meeting will be his breakthrough conquest against Federer.
