I have a copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and I wanted to get a PS3 that will be able to play it. If it works on the 80gb then I can just go ahead and get that, but if it doesnt, I have to find a 60gb because I know it will work on there

  1. yes

  2. yes!

u just have to find an emulator that works on the ps3

  3. They're confusing you. You don't have to get an emulator. There isn't any 3rd-party software for ps3 anyway. (Linux warez don't use the ps3 as a ps3 and can't run games)

The 80gb ps3 has about a 4 in 5 chance of being able to play a given ps2 game. There are online lists, you can find them on playstation.com forums, that will tell you exactly which ones. It changes with the firmware updates, so look for the latest list.

If you can't find out for sure if it's on the compatible list, get a 60. Try craigslist for the fairest price. $500 you could maybe find one for. The 60 plays 5 out of 5 ps2 games.

The system updates will never provide software emulation for ps3's that don't have ps2 hardware. That means the 40gb, and the $399 80gb version that will be released soon. It may be technically possible to make emulation on those models, but not nearly as well as on the current 80, and not easily either. Sony is not gonna do that cause they want people to put down the ps2 games and get ps3 games now.

The system updates do sometimes alter which games are compatible with the 80gb ps3 though. Not drastically but a few games are affected here and there. The 60 is the only sure way to have ps2 compatibility.
