Will Minnesota Timberwolves new guard Ricky Rubio succeed in NBA?
Hype exists in every professional sports played anywhere in the world. It is completely harmless and the basic purpose of it is to create excitement in the fans. In NBA hype is usually given to players that are about to step their
foot in professional league and are about to become rookies.
Every year in NBA draft, the top five or ten drafts are the ones that are most subjected to hype. Before the poor rookies even start, analysts start comparing them with the best in the business which i think at times puts extra
pressure on these players .Only with time we get to know if the hype was justified or not.
Ricky Rubio is amongst the most hyped-up NBA drafts from last few seasons. Ricky, who plays as a point guard for Minnesota Timberwolves was the 5th overall selection by team in 2009 draft. And since then, has been compared
to the new NBA sensations Rajon Rondo and Steve Nash. Some basketball analysts already labeled him as the upcoming superstar in NBA but Ricky is still struggling to prove analysts right.
The 6 ft 3 Spaniard started his career at early age and became the youngest player ever to play in the Spanish ABC League at age 14. Ricky is the first player born in 1990s to be drafted in the NBA draft so no matter how his career
goes, this record will stay with him forever.
Ricky after being selected by Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009 opted to stay overseas during the last two seasons. He just recently decided to move back to US to pursue his career in NBA. Rubio received a warm welcome from Timberwolves
cheerleaders and the general manager David Kahn when he arrived at the airport.
Rubio has not been able to prove his mettle yet. He played for Regal Barcelona in the Euroleague 2010-2011and his performance was very average there. He averaged 6.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game shooting 39.2 percent
from the floor. Rubio was inconsistent throughout. On occasions he would play a breathtaking shot but then waste all of it by playing like a schoolboy later. So no denying, Ricky has the potential, but he needs to show it now on the big stage.
He did not perform any well in the recent Eurobasket tournament either. Ricky was fortunate enough to have the luxury of playing for the world’s second best team. Team that is loaded with super talent, but still he did not avail
it and was outshined by his own team mates.
But again, International Basket ball is different to American. Their style of play is more defensive and individual dominance is the highlight of every game. In NBA, Ricky might perform in a much better way. At least that is what
Timberwolves would be hoping. As they took a massive risk by drafting Ricky instead of the other prospects Stephen Curry and Brendan Jennings whose stats are way impressive than Ricky.
All eyes will be on Ricky this season. The point guard needs to lift up his game and perform decently this season to keep his place. He would still be a Rookie this season so he just needs to perform outstandingly once in a while
to remind everyone that he has the ability to do good in long run. If he fails, his career will be in trouble.
