Question:

Will NOAA rename Hurricane Fay?

Hurricane Fay has already made it from the Gulf to land fall in Florida but became stationary because of an eastern front. If Fay is to break up a little and get pushed back into the Gulf would they rename it to a new hurricane if it gained strength again?

  1. No, once the storm is named it will retain that name.  Even if for some freak reason it dissipated all the way and then its remanents moved back out over the Gulf, it would still be Fay.

  2. TS Fay will keep her name.  As an example read about hurricane Ivan

  3. First of all, Fay was never a hurricane and never will be.  I don't know why people keep calling it a hurricane.  An answer to your question, it will regain the same name if it does regain strength in the Gulf, which i don't think it will.  Fay will turn into a regular low pressure system once it loses tropical storm status, so meteorologists can follow the low pressure system as it progresses.  The only way a hurricane can get there name changed is if they cross into a different ocean.

  4. why would they do that?

  5. does it really matter?

  6. I don't think so because if it did a lot of damage it would not be named Fay again ,but I'm not sure though. Hope this helps.

    Respectfully,

  7. There actually has been tropical systems that have done exactly way you describe. The name remains the same. Once it has a name it retains it until the system dissipates and even then, the low pressure area that remains will be called the remains of "the name of the storm". If it regenerates into a new storm, it will continue with the same name.
