Will NYU accept me with these conditions?

I did not do very well in High School. My average GPA over the 4 years was around 2.3. I did not take my SAT or ACT. After I graduated and many of my friends went away to college I began to realize how important an eduaction really is. I am currently attending Sac City College and I have maintained a 3.6 GPA for the past 3 semesters. I would only like to spend one more semester at a junior college and then transfer to a 4 year. My dream is to go to NYU but i dont know if i could ever be accepted because of my horrible High School record. Since i have done so good in a Junior college do you think i could be excepted into NYU Stern, or am i just wasting my time?

  1. If you are transferring to a university from a community college, most places just focus on community college performance. Since you've done well, it shows that you've straightened up and gotten on track. It helps if you are a state resident of the university you plan to attend, and you can always check out "TAG" programs of the surrounding community colleges. If you take a year of TAG, you're guaranteed admission as long as you don't fail all your classes.

  2. Stern seems like a huge reach at the moment, you might want to look at other business schools. It's good that you turned it around though, good luck

  3. I don't see you as very competitive for NYU, but there are other business school UG programs out there!  Do apply, but do NOT get your hopes up.  Make is list of all the schools that have UG programs of interest to you, and come up with a list of 5-7.  Fordham is in NYC, is not nearly as prestigous as NYU but does have a decent reputation.  You might check there as well as Baruch College.

  4. I dont realy know what NYU requirements are but if you keep the GPA up high and explain to the college recruiters what was going on and do some community work to say that you changed your life around you should be able to get into college

  5. Since you'll be transferring you're going to have to send them both your high school and college transcripts. But don't fret! They'll clearly see what a vast improvement you made and that will look really good for you. Just keep it up this last semester.

You're also going to need to take either the SAT or ACT, which will be no problem because they're administered multiple times per year. (I think ACT is four times a year, not sure about SAT. I would suggest taking both because each test is pretty different as far as testing style so doing poorly on one doesn't mean you'll do poorly on the other.) You'll also need a teacher recommendation.

Depending upon which area you go to your requirements will differ. Unfortunately Stern is very selective because it's only for transfers. On the website it says, "Applicants for transfer admission should have completed (or be in the process of completing) the following courses in order to receive serious consideration for admission: microeconomics, calculus, expository writing, and introductory accounting (a combination of managerial accounting and financial accounting totaling at least 6 semester hours)" so make sure to keep that in mind when selecting your classes.

If you aren't admitted to NYU don't be down on yourself. NYU is a very selective school and thousands of good applicants have been denied entry and went somewhere else. That doesn't mean they're dumb or that they wasted all their time trying to get into NYU, it just means that school isn't the school for them. Make NYU your top choice but please do apply to others as well. Even if they don't have the name-fame of NYU I am sure they can get you on the right track for a great career all the same. (Then when you're rich and famous you can snub NYU during interviews for being too s****. to take you!)
