Question:

Will Nadal become number 1 in the world this year?

I'm hoping that he doesn't, but I was doing some math and came up with this:

starting with Wimby until the masters cup at the end of 2008, Federer has to defend 4175 points and Nadal has to defend half of that, 2005 points. Therefore Nadal can really gain some ground on Federer in the second half of the season if he plays decent tennis.

Right now they are separated by 1145 points. So one slip up by Fed an he can kiss number one spot goodbye for the year. I'm very worried for Fed. What do you guys think?

  1. In general terms, Federer's #1 ranking is most likely in trouble if he does not win (or at least do extremely well in) Wimbledon and the US Open again. Djokovic has the Australian and Nadal won the French; however, Djokovic's 2nd round loss at Wimbledon gives him a significant drop in ranking points and it is unlikely that he will catch up. However, Rafa may or may not be able to improve his US Open result after only making the quarters last year (though I think most will agree that Federer would probably win on the fast US Open surface in a match against Nadal) and Nadal winning Wimbledon would certainly make the ranking difference much tighter (though this one's up to more debate now that Wimbledon's grass is much slower than it used to be).

  2. If were going to have a Roger-Rafa finals this year then Roger's still the number 1 player in the world after Wimbledon even if he loses....the max points for this tourney is 1000 points for the winner so its mathematically safe for Roger with 1145 points lead over Nadal...

Coming into the hardcourt season, Nadal must win a considerable amount of titles and points to at least catch up with Roger...as for Novak, he can kiss his aspirations for the numbers 1 and 2 spots goodbye for now...Djokovic should learn his lessons not to be too much vocal about other players  or he'll end up as the laughing stock of the tennis community...

Roger is at a safe distance at the moment and with the rate he's playing, im sure he will protect his lead and retain the ranking for the 5th year in a row...Go, roger, go....

  3. no,he won't be no.1.

u know if roger reaches quarter-final he will stay no.1 even if nadal wins wimbeldon.and as u know roger is King of Grass so he won't lose so easily.I think roger is gonig 2 win wimbeldon again and roger is good on hard courts,2.so he will win us open.he also can win Cincinati, madrid, paris, and so on if he plays carefully.

so don't be worried sweetie.he will stay no.1 coz he is the best and nadal will be no.1 when roger retires.

  4. No :)

  5. Federer will stay number 1, Nadal will be banned for picking his bum too much and Novaks head will get so big it will fall off.

  6. no federer will still be the world number one....nadal would be but next year

  7. no

  8. Djokovic has had an unprecedented early loss in Wimbledon and there are a lot of questions about Federer this year. So there is a very strong possibility that Nadal might end the year at world #1. Winning Wimbledon will definitely raise Nadal's chances of becoming #1.

But then there is so much of tennis left to be played. There is the summer hard court season with 2 Masters series and US Open and then the indoor season with 2 Masters series and The Tennis Masters Cup, that Federer and Djokovic (Nadal's closest rivals in the race to #1) are equally likely to end the year #1. Infact, I feel Djokovic and Federer and better hard court players than Nadal and we might see them winning more than Nadal in the rest of the season which is all hard court.

  9. Nadal has a good chance to win Wimby but time will tell if he will receive the no.1 spot.   Too, even if he does I don't see him holding it as long as Federer has but I would be happy to see Nadal hold it for a minute b/c he's remained just as consistent in holding his ground.  He deserves a chance at it so long as he keeps on going and stays in good health. No matter what happens at this time Federer will indeed replace Sampras as the top champ in the tennis world until the next naturally talented tennis genius hits the world stage.  Don't worry yourself too much.

  10. nope..federer still # 1 this year...nadal #2, and "big mouth " djokovic (who has bigger mouth than his tennis) going # 45...

  11. Well i don't think that Rafa can overtake Roger. Roger would normally win WImbledon. But i think that in time, Rafa would definitely be #1

  12. i really don't understand how the rankings work...but i'm cracking up after reading Andy K's answer hahahahaha

  13. every1 think wid sum brains

if nadal n fed reach the final of wimbledon and if roger loses

in the final then also he will also get some points

so diff. will not b like 445 or 145 (wateva is written) obviously he will get some  more points for reaching the final

  14. Let's answer this question fairly...

Nadal's biggest chance to earn more points than federer is right now, in wimbledon, because fed is defending a lot of points (1000 to be exact) compare to nadal (650 i guess??)..

So, if they both reach the final, and nadal beat him, then the point difference between both of them will be 445, hence, federer still #1... In order for Nadal to be #1 is federer lost in quarter, and he wins (very unlikely)...

But, again, IMO, the key for nadal to become #1(or federer) is to win wimbledon.. even Nadal considered "fairly good" in hardcourt, win in wimbledon will boost his confidence, and he has improving a lot, and it will be dangerous for federer to lose his #1..

If federer lose in wimbledon (and nadal wins it), i predict federer will lose his #1 at US Open...

But if federer wins wimbledon, i believe he will wins US Open too, and he still will be #1 at the end of the year..
