Will New Zealand players ever play for New Zealand?

Karmichel Hunt is a classic example of what I mean (great player BTW). After six years in Australia, he decides to play for Australia, despite the fact that he's quite obviously a Kiwi. The reason is (despite what they say) that if they play for NZ, they are not eligible to play State of Origin, which in reality is the only meaningful League Rep football. This is something that Sonny Bill Williams recently brought up on the footy show.

If you were a young talented Kiwi why on Earth would you play for New Zealand?

Does this matter?

Is there a solution?

  1. England harvest New zealand   and Australia players and Australia harvest New zealand players, its not good

  2. its about who you want to represent.. they all have their choice to play for australia or new zealand if they are eligible.. karmichael deticated himself to the australian team and calls himself an aussie so good on him.. sonny bill on the other hand he has deticated himself to new zealand he chose that.. and he wants to play australian state of origin his an idiot.. if new zealand players deticate their career to australia than its great for them to play 4 us

  3. New Zealand players already play for New Zealand... anyone that is willing to throw away their national jumper for a shot at Origin isn't a Kiwi now are they?

Those that take pride in wearing that black jersey are New Zealanders. A talented young Kiwi player will play for New Zealand because he has pride in his country, culture and his jersey. It takes a certain type of person to sell out his country for personal benefit, it takes a real person to represent his country.

  4. I'm actually wondering if actual New Zealanders will play for NZ.

Most of the current crop are Samoans and Tongans. They just have to adopt to NZ because everyone thinks all islanders are the same.

  5. I think most kiwis try to fast track their own progress to rep football by playing for nz, because its obviously not as hard to get into even though its supposed to be a higher level of football than SoO. i think if players make the decision to play for nz they shouldnt be allowed to play for origin, i have some friends that are fringe nrl players and some even playing full time in the nrl but i wont say their names though they were in a similar situation as hunt one of them actually gave up their shot at playing for origin in favour for nz. so yeah bit of a catch 20.

  6. play for your own d**n country, he only wants to play to say he has played, he will never have the passion that our guys have. When we win we are on top of the world, when we lose, we are on the brink of tears, he will never have that as he is from neither nsw or qld. If he is so desperate to play for nsw he should stop being such a hypocrite and either play for our country or his own, he cant have the best of both worlds
