Will Novak Djokovic be able to defend the world number one spot? – Tennis Special
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, has displayed a remarkable tennis performance since the start of 2011. He bagged home 10 ATP titles, including three Grand Slam titles. He started the 2012 season with the same momentum
but was unable to sustain the pace in the tournaments to follow. In the end, Djokovic regained his world number one spot due to extreme hard work and effort.
The young Serb has shown that he can win over any surface, ranging from the green grass courts of Wimbledon to the clay courts tournaments; he is unquestionably a living tennis legend. He has rallied beyond all the champions, such
as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
He is renowned for his extraordinary defence mechanism and superior game plan. He is able to generate a high pace onslaught, which gives him the ability to demolish any opposition in no time. Djokovic has the ability to impart
good serve deliveries with an above average precision. The greatest talent that Djokovic possess is the mental resilience and the passion for the sport.
Analysing the player’s performance, he nudged past the Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal, consolidating his win after a five set match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5, in the epic Australian Open final at the start of 2012 ATP World
Tour. His momentum significantly dropped as he endured losses at the hands of the British number one, Andy Murray at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship and against John Isner at the BNP Paribas Open.
In the clay court season, he lost at the hands of the king of clay, Nadal, at the Monte- Carlo Rolex Masters. At the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, he was unable to rally beyond the Serbian professional, Janko Tipsarevic. Continuing
his decent performance, he was the finalist at the French Open Grand Slam. Djokovic was never able to break the monopoly of Nadal and lost after a four-set match.
The Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, gave a shocking defeat to the right-hander Serbian at the Wimbledon Championship. The Swiss contender bagged yet another Grand Slam title and went on to register the mammoth record of surpassing
300 weeks as the world number one tennis player. Djokovic suffered from the most difficult period when he was unable to defend his bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics. He received a straight-sets defeat, 5-7, 4-6, at the hands of the Argentinean participant,
Juan Martin Del Potro.
The 25-year-old was the finalist at the US Open Grand Slam and after a tough battle, pocketed a five-set loss against the British number one, Andy Murray. He was able to avenge his former loss at the Shanghai Rolex Masters from
the right-hander British and finally regained the top spot. At the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, he gave a straight-sets loss to Federer. He was strong enough to culminate his year-end title and will most probably continue that in the next season.
The outcome of the Australian Open will be a key determinant for the world number one spot, as Federer is also eyeing to reclaim the top rank from Djokovic.
