Question:

Will Obama, like Clinton and GWB, actively invite his VP's participation in White House decision making?

Cheney has had remarkable access to the President, and was/has been involved with many decisions, more like a chief of staff in many regards. Gore less than Cheney, but participated in many briefings and set the tone for more activist role of VP of a President.

If elected, in what capacity might Obama use Biden?

  1. Obama, like many Presidents do, will consult his staff for information before making any kind of decision.  Good presidents do not make decisions "from the hip;" they think the situation over and discuss it at length.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is common for the VP to sit in on briefings with the President and help with policy decisions.  After all, wouldn't this something the second-in-command would need to do, especially since they are the ones set to take the helm if something happens to the President?

Biden has lengthy experience on the Senate foreign relations committee.  This is most likely where he will come in.  One of Obama's perceived weaknesses has been his foreign policy experience, and Biden will help fill this gap nicely.

  2. I think Obama will take Biden's learned advice.  I don't think Obama will set aside his own judgment.

  3. I hope Obama uses Biden to his best; foreign policy.

America's standing in the world today is sad.

Who better to help repair the damage than Joe Biden?

  4. I'm sure he will.  It is quite an understatement to say that Cheney was actively invited to participate.  Many believe that Bush was invited by Cheney to participate in White House decision making.

  5. You might reverse your question and have a more accurate picture.  Biden thinks a lot of himself, and is likely to give Obama all the advice he doesn't want.  Oh well, this too shall pass.
