Will R-134A work on my R-12 A/c system

So I have an old R-12 a/c system. Can I just add R-134A and would it work? I heard something like the compressor messes up. any help would be appreciated thanks.

  1. No, it won't work.  The R12 and 134 use different types of oils and they are incompatible with each other.  

    The various O-rings have to be changed out, along with the service valves; and the system needs to be flushed with a cleaner.

    I'm almost certain you can still get the R12 recharged.


  2. the R-12 MUST be remove and system evacuated, some changes must also be made. to use R-134A

  3. It will work somewhat until it destroys the seals in the compressor.

  4. not only is different oil required but 134 runs at higher pressures than R12 If at all possible repair the R12 system,bonus is it also runs colder usually.
