How come Roger Federer is still #1? Nadal beat him at the French Open and at Wimbledon. How can Nadal become #1? If he beat Federer in the final at U.S. Open, would he become #1??

  1. soon he will. hopefully this season...

  2. Stuttgart - Nadal winner, not defending this year (-250 points)

Montreal -  Federer runner up (350 pts), Nadal semis (225 pts)

Cincinnati - Federer winner (500 pts), Nadal 2nd round (35 pts)

US Open - Federer winner (1000 pts), Nadal 4th round (150 pts)

In other words, Nadal needs to perform better than he did last year in the 2 Masters Series events and gain around 900 more points and Federer needs to pretty much equal his efforts. With Nadal playing much better than he did last year,

he will more than likely perform better at Cincinnati (2nd round) and the US Open (4th round). Federer also has Djokovic nipping at his heals so will find it more difficult to repeat his successes.

This all means that I think Nadal will get the #1 spot after the US Open.

  3. Nadal can become number one, if not this season then in near future. However he will first, have to maintain his dominance on clay, as well as go deeo in next years Wimbledon to defend his points. Secondly, he will need to improve, as he has shown on grass, onto the hard courts so he could actually gain ground, where in the past he hadnt earned as many points. He is still numer 2 cause both he and Fed defended there points successfully, though Nadal earned a few more while Fed just lost a few for losing. Federer woudl have to lose in early rounds and Nadal go deep on hard courts this summer to gain ground. Unlikely, though possible.

  4. yes

  5. Roger has gathered enough points to keep him at number 1. Nadal is currently about 500 points away. Rafael getting to the No 1 spot depends on how well he does and how badly Roger does.

Nadal wins say a small tournament for 100 points, Roger will still be No 1 but if Nadal wins 700, then he has a chance, but remember, Roger's not going to be sitting there. He'll be gathering more points too. So the race will be tight. :)

Rafa will get there eventually. Fortunately he is just 22.

  6. Sure he will, if he wins the U.S open the door will be open wide!

  7. Federer will likely need to repeat as US Open champ, since Nadal has two Grand Slams under his belt, and can likely add to his resume during the summer hard court season. Since ATP rankings are based on performance from the past 52 weeks, if the US Open produces a non-Federer champion, Federer will lose most of the points that currently pads his 6,600 vs 6,055 lead over Nadal.

  8. When Nadal beat federer at the French Open there are no changes in ranking points because the scenario was basically the same as last year french open where nadal beat feder. as for the wimbledon, nadal earned 300 points for the win and 300 points is deducted to that of federer's. Before the start of wimbled on federer leads nadal by 1095 points. After wimbledon federer's lead narrows to 545 possibly 795 points because nadal will not be defending his stuttgart title so nadal loses 250 points.

But comes the US hardcourt season lots of ranking points is up for grabs for nadal and there he can overtakle federer at the number 2 spot.

  9. I am a big nadals fan, it is because of his incredible topspin. Also I hate roger federer. Nadal is only about 1150 points away from federer, even if he won wimbledon, but unfortunatley djokovic is only 400 points away from nadal.

  10. no he cant become no.1 still federer is playing tennis and it is the first year for nadal as he has won the both french and wimbledon and he is still thousand points less than federer; and he can become no.1 if he continues to  play agressive tennis against federer which no one plays.
