  1. They might. But it would not last too long. Russian needs the foreign exchange to buy food from the free world. Interestingly the Russian population is declining. More people die every day of alcoholism, smoking related health problems and suicide than are born. In twenty years time the entire population of Russia will be less than Florida.

Look up the demographic charts if you don't believe me.

  2. It's a  two  way  street.  If  i  have  a  shop  and  you  don't  have  money  do  i  want you  in  my  shop,  NO!  If  you  have  money  i  want  you  to  spend  in  my  shop.  If  i  discriminate  against  you  and  you  have  money  i  might  as  well  close  the  shop  down.  There'll  be  no  shortage  of  buyers  for  oil  and  gas  if  santions  are imposed.

  3. They need the money and during the coming escalation of tensions in the

mid East in October, they will make super profits due to the problems with  supply from Iraq, Iran etc.  They will boycott the US  mercury and hormone tainted chickens  in return.  And no caviar and vodka either coming US way!!!

  4. Yes, definitely. They can afford to do more than just use rhetoric!

During the cold war Russia hadn't any money - they had vast tracts of land which they had pulled into the USSSR against their will and they were having to keep those people under control as well as try to industrialise the country and keep up a pretence of armaments. Why do you think Kruschev backed off when Kennedy called his bluff? They didn't have the money or the will to go to war again - their whole shambolic existence as the union of soviet socialist republics would have been blown apart for the lie that it was! Since the fall of the Iron curtain the West including our own once great nation have invested billions in Russia, but why didn't they see that the great bear was sleeping with one eye open? It was always bound to happen - they want more and more and who are we to say stop? A silly little, overpopulated, under resourced island adrift in the drowning sea of the european union - and Milliband dares to rattle a sabre!!

  5. doubtful - during the cold war between the West and Soviet Union  when tensions were much worse than now they still kept the gas and oil flowing

  6. Look at the consequences.

Yes they can turn off the gas and oil but that turns off their income!!

The moment the ordinary Russian starts to have the old troubles of not being paid on time, long lines for bread etc the president and prime minister will loose political support.

Just as failing to face of Germany before WWII ,  the Argentinians in the Falklands, even Sadam in two Iraq wars it can only lead to worse things unless the West Acts!!

Not acts of war but diplomatic and business restrictions on Russia, Assistance to the ex Russian countries to remain ex!!
