You've got an interesting interpretation/ definition of "success." Palin was the mayor of small town with a population of 5505 people. Nancy Pelosi is a Representative of San Francisco, population 764,976. BIG difference, don't you think? Palin then went on to become governor of Alaska for all of two years before McCain picked her to be his VP. Maybe McCain thinks he's getting another trophy wife out of the deal.

The average voter has no say in who serves as speaker of the house of representatives. That person reaches that position by being elected by his constituents, and subsequently elected by his peers. I don't think a single party has ever had more than person on the ballot for speaker.
