There was apparently some talk of this.

The initial conversation mentioned it as a plan to either move the riders to Toon town or get an expansion team. There is almost no way the Riders move to Saskatoon --- too many of their big wigs have deep Regina ties --- and I think this could be the rare instance when I agree with the Canadian CFL fans who are expansion naysayers. Both cities float around 200K. Filling a 30K stadium from a 200K audience would be very tough.

That said potentially it COULD work. If the CFL were to tighten up/modify/lower their salary cap, structure things a little more favorably for smaller market teams, and set more favorable expansion rules, I think you could safely have teams in both cities feeding off the natural rivalry. But we are talking fairly big changes.

  1. In a word: no.  The province of Saskatchewan has a population of about a million people, less than 5 of the other 7 CFL cities (not counting Regina, obivously).  Dunno if you've ever been there, but Rider Pride runs deep, and considering that they're defending Grey Cup champions, I don't think anybody in Sask is gonna wanna cheer for an expansion team.

Again, this is a rumour, and nothing more.  It ain't gonna happen.

  2. This is not a great idea.

Saskatoon should buid a stadium, maybe a 12,000 seat stadium for the Huskys to play in.

A long time ago the Regina Roughriders changed their  name to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. They are Sakatchewan's team, not just Regina, or southern Saskatchewan, all of Saskatchewan.

Why would they lower the salary cap?  The players would never go for that. If you want to kill the league, lower what the players make.

  3. so tell me, what is your obsession with expansion,

ever heard the saying, if it isn't broken, don't fix it?
