Will Sebastian Vettel be able to prove his critics wrong? – Formula 1Many believed 2012 to be the season for Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel to show that he has what it takes to be become one of the greats of the sport.Vettel the defending champions of two back-to-back seasons was criticised over his achievements that they were heavily dependent on the machinery provided to him by Red Bull. While the German’s maiden Championship win in 2010 was a challenging one as he battled his team-mate Mark Webber for the victory, but 2011 was a different story altogether. Vettel dominated the 2011 season with 11 Grand Prix wins.Contrary to Vettel’s 11 wins his team-mate Webber only managed a single Grand Prix win in the season in the same spec car. The Red Bull car was in a different league in terms of performance. The second placed team McLaren only managed four Grand Prix wins in the season which showed the huge contrast in the two top teams of the season.2012 was going to be the season for Vettel to prove his mettle and the happy faced German could not start the season as he would have liked to. Suddenly the ever smiling face of Vettel showed signs of frustrations when during the second race of the season in Malaysia. The weather was rainy and Vettel was about to lap Narain Karthikeyan as he was gunning for a fourth place finish in the race but when he tried to overtake the Indian he turned his car a little slower and crashed it into the Red bull car.Vettel after the race clearly frustrated called him a “cucumber”. Karthikeyan maintained it was not his fault. Vettel though refocused after the race and started to understand the competitiveness in the season. He has been coming up with consistent performances. So far he has only been able to win a single Grand Prix at Bahrain along with six other race winners in the season. The only person to win more than two Grands prix in the season is Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso who also happens to be leading the drivers’ championship.Red Bull has once again come up with a strong car in a season that has very little to differentiate between teams. Valencia was proof of their advancement as Vettel was dominated throughout the weekend. He went on to top the qualifiers and during the race lead the race comprehensively.Such was his dominance that at one point in the race he was 20 seconds ahead of the second placed driver. It was an imperative race for the Red Bull driver as it was going to take him into a healthy lead in the drivers’ championship if he had won the race but heartbreak loomed for him as the car’s engine failed on him and Vettel had to retire. Now Vettel is left at fourth 26 points behind the leader Alonso. It is going to be a difficult task for him to gain on Alonso who has been spectacular in the season so far but the unpredictability of the season has been such that the German will find hope and the confidence that he is very much in contention for the title. The race at Silverstone is going to be imperative for both Vettel and Alonso in the title bid. Whether Vettel will be able to shut his critics out in the season remains to be seen as there is still a lot more action to take place.Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article are solely of the writer’s and do not reflect bettor.com’s official editorial policy.
