Will Serena Williams and Juan Martin Del Potro participate at the US Open – the guessing games continue

It has been going on for quite some time now. There are millions of questions flying all over the place about whether the queen of tennis, Serena Williams, will be participating at the upcoming Grand Slam or whether the former champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, will be making a comeback at this year’s US Open. Every other day there is news about these tennis stars in reference to their participation at the US Open next month. The media is flooded by statements from their agents but still nothing is confirmed as yet.
Serena Williams has been flying high in her tennis career. She won at Wimbledon this month which is her second Grand Slam title this year, as she also won the Australian Open and is currently ranked as the world number one in female singles tennis. This American tennis player has won thirteen Grand Slam singles titles in her professional tennis career and her earnings are higher than any other female athlete.
Recently, this tennis diva put her amazing career in jeopardy when she stepped on a broken glass piece and injured her right foot. She has had foot surgery and is still reported to have been walking with the help of crutches, as her injury is still troubling her and she cannot walk on her own. Although Serena has already signed up for the US Open and is expecting to recover in time for it, her agent has declared that she might not be able to regain her form back.
The US Open will commence on the 30th of August and things look sceptic for this female tennis star, as only a month may not be enough for her to recover and also practice to prepare herself for the hard court matches which await her at this Grand Slam. The news of Serena Williams not being able to take part at the US Open has left millions of fans miserable and they are constantly checking her tweets to see any update on her participation in the grand tennis tournament taking place in New York, America.
Another announcement that excited tennis fans from all over the world was that the Argentinean champion, Juan Martin Del Potro may also be making a comeback at the US Open this year. Del Potro has been deprived of his game of tennis since the Australian Open this year, where he suffered from a wrist injury due to which he has been out of the rest of the season and has not been able to participate in any other tennis tournament throughout 2010.
However, Del Potro’s participation at the US Open 2010 is still uncertain as his recovery is still in progress. This is something that he has in common with the American tennis superstar, Serena Williams.
Although according to the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the Argentinean player has also entered his name into the US Open, his doctors have declared that taking part in any tennis tournament in the near future is not possible for the former tennis champion. Doctors say that they cannot give an exact date of recovery for the tennis star. Del Potro has still not picked up a racquet and started playing which makes his outlook for the US Open quite bleak. He was the champion at the US Open last year. This has been his first and only Grand Slam singles title till now. This is why his comeback is even more anticipated in New York.
Del Potro is no doubt an exceptional player. Even though he has not been playing throughout most of the year, he is still currently ranked world number seven. This Argentinean became the first man, other than Rafael Nadal, to have beaten the Swiss player Roger Federer in any Grand Slam final at the US Open 2009. His injury has not only left himself miserable, but has also let down thousands of fans out there who have been waiting for Del Potro to make a comeback for a long time now.
An injury really does terribly mess up a professional athlete’s career – that is something said without guessing. As for Williams and Del Potro participating at the US Open 2010, all that is still a bunch of guessing games.
