Will Smith helps Kansas City Royals upset Los Angeles Angels 4-1 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals put up a great show as they upset the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in California on Tuesday, July 24 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Centre-fielder Lorenzo Cain provided Royals with an early momentum. Cain homered to left in the first inning and Alex Gordon scored to put Kansas City 2-0 ahead.
In a low scoring game, Gordon made the most of opportunities as he drove in a single to left in the second to extend the lead to 3-1. Shortstop Alcides Escobar grounded into fielder’s choice in the second as the Royals took complete control of the situation.
"At first, I didn't know how to take it because I was so young," said Royals’ starting pitcher Will Smith, who gave up just a run in seven effective innings. "But people kept telling me it was a good thing for me. I'm very happy in Kansas City. We've got
a great young core here, so I'm excited. It always feels good to win, going against a buddy of yours like Garrett."
"This is a tough lineup to navigate through, and he really got locked in during the fourth inning," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said.
Angels had the better of their opponents in series opener, securing a comfortable 6-3 win. Manager Mike Scioscia was expecting his team to produce another dominant performance on Tuesday evening to consolidate their position at the top of the American League
West Division but that did not turn out to be the case.
Oakland Athletics, who humbled the Blue Jays, have now replaced the Angels at second place on AL West standings. With nine wins in their last ten games, the A’s are looking in commanding form and the Angels will have to play out of their skin to unsettle
them.
Royals, on the other hand, will take a lot of confidence from their win against a team of Angels’ calibre. Manager Ned Yost will be hoping to give similar results in the upcoming games to restore some of the lost pride.
