Russia is not particularly eager to absorb South Ossetia.  There are a number of reasons for that that would take some time to explain.  Still, Ossetia obviously cannot exist completely on its own for one thing because of having such a neighbor as Georgia, so most likely Ossetia will effectively become a protected and supported territory.  If Ossetia is recognized by Belorus (and there has been some indications of the possible recognition), then it will likely become a member of what is currently known as Russia-Belorus Union.  It can also theoretically become a member of the ODKB (mutual defence treaty), though the latter membership is more uncertain.

I think South Ossetia should join with North Ossetia and become a republic within the Russian Federation.

I think Abkhazia can also become a republic within the Russian Federation.

Tiny states cannot survive on their own in that region.

They have to decide if they want to be part of Georgia or Russia.

Georgians will have to make this shakespearian choice : either they live for the eternity with russian occupation forces, and they do not acknowledge Abkhazian and Ossetian independence, or they accept and Russia will leave - this will last as long as US stay in Irak - probably 3 centuries -but Georgia will not join the NATO

Russian have played incredibly well - doing this they show they are ready to act in similar conditions with Transnitria, North Ukraina and Crimea if necessary - USA let their pants fall on their feet - I doubt that many people really understood the importance of the very last days that we experienced -

They say it is going to be an independent republic - NOT part of Russia, but looks like that is only formality.

Think about it this way - S.O. doesn't have anything of their own economy developed - so economically they totaly depend on Russia, Next - their

military fully equiped with russian weapon, there are going to be russain military bases all over the region, plus the majority of new formed goverment are - russians!

So -what kind of independend republic we can talk about here????
