Question:

Will Sphinx Moths eat cultivated Mirabilis (Four O'Clock) or only wild Four O'Clock?

I'm trying to attract them to my butterfly garden and I know that my neighbor has found some in hers. . not sure which host plant they're using.

I found a list of what they enjoy.  There is no difference between wild and cultivated plants as long as you are not using any pesticides and not disrupting the habitat too much (try to water directly near the ground rather than spraying the whole plant).  Here is a clip from my source - bringing the larvae might help you maintain an adult population, however you need to get some adult food or they will all go to your neighbor's garden when they mature.

    Caterpillar hosts: A great diversity of plants including willow weed (Epilobium), four o'clock (Mirabilis), apple (Malus), evening primrose (Oenothera), elm (Ulmus), grape (Vitis), tomato (Lycopersicon), purslane (Portulaca), and Fuschia.

    Adult food: Nectar from a variety of flowers including columbines, larkspurs, petunia, honeysuckle, moonvine, bouncing bet, lilac, clovers, thistles, and Jimpson weed.
