  1. It depends.  Right now oil is still pretty high.  If Spirit has hedged some of its fuel needs as Southwest and JetBlue have, then they should be in a better position.  Also it seems as though the routes that make money are the international routes.  It seems as though Spirit is starting to fly more international routes which is good for them.  Also if they maintain their aircraft well and retire the older ones, then they should be in a better position to survive.

Other airlines have taken steps to cut costs.  United announced that it is grounding its most fuel inefficient aircraft and also announced that they are laying off workers.

  2. Short-Term, Yes! Spirit Airlines have closed down their Detriot and LaGuardia bases which makes Ft. Lauderdale their main hub city.

    New routes

Spirit Airlines will begin service from the following cities to their listed destinations beginning on the listed date. Some routes listed below may already be operated by Spirit Airlines from other destinations.

    Fort Lauderdale (FLL)

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago (POS) begins June 14, 2008

Bogotá, Colombia (BOG) begins July 24, 2008

    Orlando (MCO)

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (MYR) begins June 12, 2008

The airline also is awaiting foreign government approvals to fly to Caracas, Venezuela, and has received approval to begin service to Chiclayo, Perú, but has not set a start date yet.

They are a total of 35 airplanes as their fleet size with 50 more on order.

The Long-Term, maybe unless they can focus on advertising to boost their revenue.

  3. they are the next ones to fall. even the employees at continental are suffering, now we have to pay up to $300 to fly in standby and coach. so yeah if you work for them gt a backup plan going
