  1. Yes, the blu-ray player will "up-convert" a standard DVD.  Which essentially means it will, through a process known as line doubling, digitally fill in the resolution up to 1080.  The only major noticeable difference comes at the edges of images and outlines which are a bit smoother.


  2. Well, the blue laser technology that plays a blue ray cannot play a regular dvd, but most dvd players, if not all, will have 2 lasers, one for the blue ray and a regular one for a regular DVD.
