Question:

Will The Fourth Blue Egg Hatch??? I Found A Nest On My Window Ledge....?

I have found a nest on my window ledge. Currently, I see 3 chicks (hatched). However, there is still one light blue egg which hasn't hatched. The mother is still coming in to feed the 3 baby chicks. Has the fourth egg gone bad? Will it still hatch? Like is the mother supposed to incubate the egg? I believe the bird is an American robin. This is because the mother has a orangish chest and blackish head and wings. Also the egg is light blue. I will really appreciate your help =)

  1. The eggs are often laid on different days. This may be the last egg to have been laid.  It should hatch 14 days afterwards; give it another day or two.

  2. Unfortunately I don't have a difinitive answer for you. Do you know how old the other chicks are? It seems to me when ours hatched it was only a few hours and they all hatched....At least I THINK they all hatched. I can't see into the nest! Also, I think if the egg is "bad" the mama will push it out of the nest when she is ready. Enjoy the sight of those chicks! It's beautiful to watch them take their first flight! Our mama robin is now on her second brood of the season.

  3. I can`t guaranty that the fourth egg will hatch. I depends how many days have gone by. Couple months my American Robin had her first brood outside my window. On the window box.She had three eggs.I didn`t know anything about birds so I looked It up. They auually lay their eggs a day apart. After 12 to 14 days they started hatching. Also a day apart. After 12 to 14 days they grew so big they all flew away. About three weeks ago I noticed she laid four eggs In four days. About 12 to 14 days they started hatching. It took four days. By the end of 12 to 14 days they will fly away. I would watch that 4th egg. If too many days have gone by It Is possibly that It did not

fertilize. Give It a couple days then you might have to remove It. Good Luck. It Is so exciting. I even named them. The first three were,Little, Bo, and Peep. The second four are Itsy,

Bitsy, Teeny, and Weeny. Like the Bikini song.I have seven

    Grand Birdies.

  4. leave it alone.

you shoulden't mess with it even if it is bad.

however, it is probably the runt.

it will hatch in 2 or 3 more days.

OR, if it is bad, it doesn't harm the babies or the mother.

when the babies leave the nest, if you wish to keep it, if it's still there, then you may.

but please leave it alone until they leave, it could cause harm to the babies. or scare the mother.

    thankyou

  5. If the egg didn't hatch along with the others, it won't.  It's a dud.  Robins don't sit on their nests until all of the eggs are laid.  The eggs are dormant and do not begin to develop until incubation starts.  They develop at the same rate, and all hatch at about the same time.

  6. The egg may be sterile or it may be dead, but just leave it alone.

Birds have been doing this for millions of years and they probably know best.  Have fun watching them.
