Will Tiger Woods ever be able to surpass Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major wins? – Golf Feature
Tiger Woods has always been a hot topic among the golf analysts regarding his comparison with the legendary Jack Nicklaus and his record of 18 major title wins in the career.
Woods succeeded in registering a total of 14 victories, four short of Jack Nicklaus’ record.
Woods has always aimed to break the record of the most major wins. However, his knee injury in 2008 and his personal issues sidelined him for most of the golf season in 2009 and 2010.
In turn, he remained winless for about two years until his victory came in the Chevron World Challenge at the end of the 2011 golf season.
That was a time when his critics were taken aback because of his resurging performances in the events he played.
He stood third in the 2011 Australian Open followed by an impressive performance in the 2011 Presidents Cup.
He gave a signal to his opponents that he is ready to regain his position in the world of golf by playing the kind of golf that he used to display in his peak years.
According to his plans, he started well on the 2012 golf season with a third place finish in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
Moreover, his final-round performance in the Honda Classic proved to be the best of his career when he carded a total of four birdies and two eagles to finish two strokes off the lead set by Rory McIlroy.
According to Woods, he was completely back in shape and ready to record some stunning wins in the world of golf, aiming the Masters Tournament in the month of April.
However, the injuries struck him again and he had to leave the field of the World Golf Championship – Cadillac Championship on the final day when he teed off at the 12th.
According to the latest reports by his doctors, he had a minor injury in his left Achilles tendon and it will be healed soon.
However, the only worry is that it was the same injury that sidelined him from playing two major events during the 2009 golf season.
This again created doubts in the minds of the analysts about Woods being able to register a win in the major event again and challenge Nicklaus’ record.
He already had multiple surgeries in the past and the recent injury indicates the possibility of more to come.
Moreover, he had been facing serious troubles in making a complete comeback to his form because of his putting, which was the major reason behind his numerous career wins.
Therefore, he does not have much time left with him to record five more wins to surpass Nicklaus’ record, as the injuries will not allow him to play for a long period of time.
Apart from the injury issues and putting failures, the other problem that challenges Woods is the influx of competitive players in the sport of golf.
There are now many young players who have entered the game and stunned their opponents on the field. Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson are to name a few.
Such quality young players can really make it difficult for him to record 19 major wins in total. It seems he will have to remain the second highest major winner throughout his life.
