  1. do not take chances. the electric circuitry and components can easily damage. all ready moisture in the battery holder can damage you cam. Lenses have often coatings that are not prepared for much moisture either. Look in a manual and it will tell you how to protect the cam Besides that there are special protectors: Camera Armor is a model specific close fitting "skin" for your SLR camera:

  2. Since the steam is essentially distilled water it won't actually do any damage to the electronics. However if there's filth that can dissolve in the moisture then yes, it will conduct electricity and damage things. Also, there's the the issue of having moisture in your lens - if not dried out this can lead to fungus growing in your lens and damaging it.

  3. One of the big concerns is  if you get condensation forming between the elements in your lens. You don't want condensation forming in or on any of your equipment if you can avoid it, but at least on or in a camera body it will evaporate again. You may get some residue on your sensor that should be cleanable...but if you get condensation between lens elements, that's nearly impossible to get back out of there!

  4. Yes.  Cameras and their electronic components do not like water, or any kind of moisture.
