Vancouver, BC, Canada will host the 2010 Winter Olympics. As a result, condominiums have been literally popping-up everywhere and prices have soared where only families making over $120,000 a year can afford to buy. Businesses have not been growing as fast… In this city, where old narrow bridges, poor public transportation and whose traffic jams are common on its only main road to the Olympic site, do you think it will be able to maintain this growth and even more attract/retain businesses after the Olympics?

  1. Actually, I believe it will be able to not only maintain but possibly even increase its growth. The cities that have been used for the olympics have all managed to grow afterwards, even though they have also almost all aquired incredibly large debts in the process of hosting the Olympics (summer or winter).

  2. after the Olympics is another thing all together. in the lead up to lots of jobs and new construction, then there is always a slow down shortly after, because the job creation funds will be over drawn, and competition for skilled jobs also increase. it is a hard equation to balance, because Olympic cities have only started posting profits for host them.

i am no economics expert, just some in sites from being a manager in a major logistic distribution company, and our game plan for handling such events.
