San Diego Padres’ right-fielder, Will Venable had an outstanding day with the bat as he struck four RBIs including a solo homer and went 1-for-4 with an average of .246 in the Padres’ 9-2 win against the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park, San Diego on September
28.
In the second inning, Cubs’ second baseman Blake DeWitt hit a single-run drive towards centre-field but Starlin Castro ground out and Jeff Baker popped out to first base. Aramis Ramirez got out to second base when Reed Johnson hit a grounder into fielder’s
choice to short-stop position. Similarly, Orlando Hudson and Chris Denorfia both flied out while Chase Headley struck-out without posting any run at the bottom of second inning.
Padres’ batters blasted four runs during the third inning to get a 4-0 lead. Wade LeBlanc scored the first run for Padres when Cameron Maybin drove a double-run shot to left-field. Nick Hundley struck a three-run homer (406 feet) towards left-field while
Maybin and Venable both contributed two collective runs to end the four-run campaign for Padres. During the fourth, both teams scored one run to move the score-board 5-1.
Baker posted the first run for Chicago when Tony Campana reached first base on an infield single and Luis Montanez moved to third base. On the other side, Andy Parrino was saved to reach first base on the error of Cubs’ Castro and Hudson scored a single
run to raise the lead for Padres. Denorfia occupied third base and Anthony Rizzo moved to second base to end the fourth inning.
LeBlanc pitched well for the Padres as he threw his seven innings with an ERA of 4.63 and struck-out three batters. He permitted five hits, two runs, two walks and two earned runs on his 103 pitches.
In the fifth inning, Cubs’ batters posted one run and reduced their lead 5-2. Castro hit a sacrifice fly to right-field and Steve Clevenger contributed a single run to keep the Cubs alive. Padres stepped on the gas again and smashed four runs during sixth
inning to advance their lead 9-2. Venable hit a solo homer (400 feet) towards left-centre while Parrino, LeBlanc and Maybin each singled to complete a four-run sixth inning.
As a result, Padres won the three-game series 2-1 after defeating the Cubs in a series decider.
