Will Vista Home Basic Go Decently Fast With A 20.4 GB Hard Drive?

  1. A 20 GB hard drive is pushing the limit on Vista's space requirements. Even if it was fast, it probably wouldn't have enough space left over to do anything useful.

    Theoretically, if this was a 10,000 RPM hard drive, Vista would perform quite well. But I've never seen a 10,000 RPM 20 gigger. A 20 gig would likely be either:

    A.) an SSD, which is a poor idea for Windows, because writing to it is slower than a magnetic hard drive. Since Windows needs to write to the drive almost constantly for paging, you will probably have very bad performance.

    B.) an older 4200 or 5400 RPM hard drive, which would be terribly slow, even for XP.
