Will Walker to make a comeback with Drapac Professional Cycling Team
Will Walker has announced his return to professional cycling after his premature departure in 2009. He had to leave professional cycling because of tachycardia and was under medication for a long time.
The former Australian Champion is all set to make a comeback with Drapac Professional Cycling Team.
He won the silver medal during the Under 23 road race at the 2005 UCI World Championships in Spain.
Will has received the green signal from the doctors and he has decided to continue the professional pursuit with the Australian team.
The 26-year-old started his professional career with Team Rabobank in 2006. He stayed with the team for a period of three years and moved to Team Fuji-Servetto in 2009.
Will was last seen in action with the Spanish team in 2009.
His major wins include the Under 23 National Road Championships in 2006 and his 11th position at stage 2 at the Giro d’ Italia 2007.
He also won the stage 4 of the Bay Classic Series, along with the stage 13 of the Herald Sun Tour 2004.
Walker finished second at the Under 23 Road Race Championships and the Oceania Tour 2005.
He won the third stage of the Geelong Bay Classic Series 2009, which was his last memorable appearance on the bike.
The 26-year-old told Cyclingnews, "I just started doing some rides with my brothers [fellow cyclists Johnnie and Nick] and locally and I was going quite well off very little training and my heart was feeling good again and I just thought at 26 ".
Agostino Giramondo, Drapac’s Sports Director, believes that the Australian’s inclusion in the team will help the side in the new year.
He cited, "Will has been set a very thorough medical program to monitor his progress, which includes providing the team with a fortnightly report on his progress”.
Will is currently focusing on the Australian National Road Race Series. He last participated in the race back in 2004.
Drapac Professional Cycling Team will ride the Mersey Valley Tour, in Tasmania, scheduled on April 21.
It is still uncertain if Walker will ride the Tasmanian race but he is definitely ready to make an impact during the season ahead.
