Question:

Will Washington Mutual cash 3rd party checks?

Does anyone know if WAMU will cash 3rd-party-checks? The name on the check is my brothers but has my address on it. He doesn't have a bank account (long story). Would I be able to just deposit it into the ATM without having him being there?

  1. If the check is made out to your brother, do not try to deposit it to your account.  It will get kicked out of processing.  Take it into the bank with him present and ask an officer if they will allow him to sign the check over to you for deposit to your account.  He will need two forms of ID!

  2. They certainly will not CASH such a check, but if your brother endorses the check, and then you also endorse, you should be able to deposit the check into your account.  WAMU will probably put a hold on the funds involved until they are certain that the check is legitimate and will clear, but eventually you should gain access to the money.

  3. I'd just have him endorse it to you and then you sign it and deposit it in an ATM.  I've done this many times and never had a problem.  If they do have a problem then find a new bank as this is a very basic thing.
