Question:

Will X-Stiff be too stiff for me?

I'm a 6 handicaper (although I should be lower...my short game isn't very good). I'm not sure exactly what my swing speed is, but it is definitely over 100mph. My tendency is to draw the ball. I probably average over 250 in the air for my drives with a 9 degree driver (stiff flex), but can definitely hit it further when I actually hit it well. My problem lately with my driver was actually a pretty good hook. I had a Callaway ERC which already had a little draw built in.

I found a Callaway FT-5 Neutral Driver with an XStiff Aldila shaft on eBay for an unbelievable deal and I had to pounce on it. Did I make the wrong choice or do you think I will be fine? I'll tell ya what, if it fades a little with a little less distance, I will be perfectly fine with it. I WISH I had a fade, lol.

Thanks for the help!!

  1. Your hook may be the result of too strong a grip.....or too tight a grip.....or several other things.....The driver from what you are saying is not at fault......the fault lies in your swing......Its not the arrows but the bowman that makes it all work.  Try the callaway...I doubt that you will see anything other than what your current driver does for you now.

  2. It sounds like you might be OK with the X, but you might want to get fit by a pro to make absolutely certain.  The neutral bias in the head can help you hit a fade and a draw, just depends on how you manipulate the clubead.  There's more weight in the heel of a draw biased head, which makes rolling the face over in the follow-through easier, for a straight-to-draw-type flight path.  The neutral weighting is just that, and is more dependant on the swinger to make a certain shot happen.

If you get fit and find out you need a softer flex, you can always get decent to very good shafts from places like Ebay (golf shaft depot is a personal fav).

  3. You have already answered your question with the purchase. According to you, you have a swing speed of 100 mph plus. You are a 6 handicap with a poor short game which is almost impossible for anyone to consistently score low if that part is not excellent. Finally fades are not built into clubs. The fade is the result of the golf swing and the manner with which a golf club is gripped. If the player has a good swing plane, the weak grip will produce a fade and the strong grip will produce a draw.

  4. Try hitting the club if you dont like the way it feels, reshaft it. If you do decide to reshaft it go to somewhere that can measure swing speed, ball flight and spin rate. Probably cost you $25 but they can tell you the spec's on shafts that should work best for you.   Its worth it.

  5. if i were you i would buy the driver, and then have it reshafted if you find the aldila to stiff.

  6. i swing more than 100 mph club head speed *i dont swing 2 hard though...not always* if your over 125 then they arnt 2 stiff, work on the fade 2 help u land soft on greens...put some lead tape on the outsie of your driver 2 help u fade it *or hit it more right*

p.s.: the game is all about short game, its what seperates tiger from u

  7. i believve you will be fine since you swing so fast, xstiff shaft is good
