  1. They're the same basic engine.

    The '77 has Points Ignition,,,

The '96 RT has a CDI Magneto.

The magnetos on both interchange,,,but  only as a Complete Assembly.

Meaning that You can install the RT's CDI on the DT Engine,,,and that will keep the more reliable, pointless ignition.

And all the wires will connect Directly to the bike just like Original

OR,,,if You use the DT engine As-Is with the Points Magneto,,,

you MUST Also use a DT Ignition Coil(spark plug coil),,,,and will probably have to do some very simple/minor adaptation to get the  Wires connected to the RT's harness .

Almost Any Coil from Any points magneto will work---if ya dont have the original DT's coil.

The electrical systems are Very basic and simple on Both engines & Similar to each each---but NOT exactly the same.

(**DT had Lites & was street legal,,,RT>No Lites Dirt Bike)

    ...........................

Carbs are Different,,but will interchange---You can use either carb on either engine.

    ...........................

Exhaust,,,honestly I do Not know for a fact.

If it Doesn't bolt-on Directly,,,it's gonna be VERY CLOSE and probly can be made to fit with very little work.

  2. do you have the ability to weld in motor mounts and possibly chop the frame here and there?

    if not, most likely not...

you can stick nearly any engine in any bike, but interchanable engines are HIGHLY scarce.... you have to be able to make it work, some require more work then others (one you might have to cut the frame and re-weld supports to make room here and there, and on another you may need to just weld in a few motor mounts)
