No, 82-99 will interchange rather easily, the mounts for a 05 are slightly different and it won't bolt right up.  You can buy an adapter bracket for about $100 but the 96 Sporty tank has a petcock for a gravity-fed carburetor and the 05 has a fuel pump inside the tank to provide 55-62 pounds of pressure to the fuel injection system.

They changed the frame in 04 to rubber mount so the tank mounts were changed.

But hey try it out I could be wrong.

i think it was about 1994 that the sporty's petcock was switched to the left side, before that, they were on the right

so yes, it should still fit.... but only on a peanut style setup on the 05, if it's a custom, the donor tank will be smaller
