Our family just decided to get into horses. My mom use to have horses, but had to sell them a while back. So now were new in it and need some info. My dad has a 2006 F-150 with a 4.6L V-8, and we bought a class 3 reese hitch, and braking system. The trailer is a two horse double axle with brakes. Will it be safe?

  1. If the trailer has brakes, does not put too much weight on the tongue, and does not exceed the towing weight limit of the truck it should be fine. A friend of mine had a 2004 F-150 with the same engine and it towed a huge utility trailer with my truck (1996 dodge ram 1500) on it fine. The truck squated like crazy, but it was able to pull it up hills and maintain speed on the highway.

  2. it should be fine if the hitch and brake controller is properly installed

  3. The easy way to find the answer to your question is: figure out the loaded weight of the trailer and the tongue weight, then look in the truck's owner's manual.  Estimate the trailer weight at 2500 pounds.

The owner's manual will tell you how heavy a load the truck can pull (the limit is the transmission) and how much weight is allowed on the tongue (the limit is the rear suspension).

Here's one trailer vendor that has useful information
