Will a .45ACP round fit in a .40 S&W magazine ?

I'm new to handguns and after I went to the range the other day I noticed that they accidently charged me for .45 when I was shooting .40. Since I was shooting the new XD .40 Subcompact I just bought during the wait time I don't have it to inspect it for damage by shooting the wrong round. Is it even possible to load the wrong rounds? Wouldn't I know it immediately? I'm just paranoid that I might have accidently damaged my new gun before I even brought it home... Someone please tell me everything is fine..

If you were able to  get keep the 45's in the magazine while firing at all the pistol would have jammed up at some point. Those 2 rounds are substantially different in diameter...the .45 would not chamber in a .40 as it is larger.

If you had things wrong the other way...the smaller 40SW would fall into the chamber and the firing pin would likley not impact the primer. If you could get it to go off the bullet would fly forward.. but as it could not contact the barrels rifling accuracy would be non existant.

New to guns? ALWAYS make sure you have the correct ammuniton for your gun...

a 45 Wont fit in the Magazine.  And it wouldn't fit in the chamber.  Your fine.  For future reference though always check your ammo.  I have bought ammo from the local sporting goods store.  one time i got an 8MM mauser in with 7.62X54R.  Don't know how that happened.  And the other time I got two 5.45X39 Rounds in with some 5.56X45.  got to be careful.

There is .052 inches difference in diameter of the two rounds, and magazines are not particular about that little difference, so a .45 may fit in the .40 magazine. However the chambers are EXACT, so a .45 would never chamber in a .40 barrel.

If you really want to know about fitting the magazine, next time you go to the range, borrow a .45 and see if it will fit.
