Well to run Crysis on Maximum You need to Have Windows Vista because direct X 10 is available only on Vista. If you have it then Direct X 10 and pixel shaders 4.0 will take your graphics to the maximum. I don't know much about COD4 so I'm unable to tell you anything about that. Hope I've helped

Negative.  Crysis on high settings will be a slideshow even on 1024x768.  COD4 is a different story, though.  You should see around 35 frames per second on high settings @1280x1024.  I prefer a higher framerate than that, especially when I play multi-player, but it's not too bad, really.

The 8600GT will only get ~8 frames per second on high settings at 1280x1024 resolution in Crysis.  That is nowhere near playable.

EDIT:  I'm talking about High settings, not Ultra High, for Crysis.  UH is DX 10 only, which is Vista only.  Don't bother trying to run Crysis on Ultra High with an 8600GT.  It will take 5 full seconds just to turn around.
