i blew the 4.0 engine in my cherokee and want to stick with a 4.0. i found a 4.0 High Output out of a 97 Jeep Cherokee and was wondering if it will work in my 89 Jeep Cherokee. and what modifications would i have to make to get it to run.

i know that the ECU is way different. so will my factory ecu work on the h/o engine?

if not, will i be able to bolt my head onto the newer block? and will it run right? OR can i put my injector rail onto the newer head? thanks, and any info will help!

  1. This is just a guess, but it would surprise me if the motor did NOT bolt into the '89. After that, it's a question of getting it to run & you'd be better off utilizing the electronics off of the donor vehicle. Otherwise, something will not be set up correctly, either in the fuel map, the spark timing, etc. and it won't run correctly or for very long or both.

    Hope this helps.
