Will a Chihuahua and a Cat get along together?

Well, I'm moving in a few weeks and currently I have a 3 year old Chihuahua male. Once I get there, I'm seriously considering getting either a full grown cat or a kitten as well. I'm wondering if my dog will get along with the cat/kitten. And would he get along better with a cat OR a kitten?

i got a kitten after my dog was full grown, they were both a little afraid of each other at first, but now they are the best of friends. i would get a kitten, it's easier if the cat is raised with the dog.
