  1. a male dwarf gourami and a female betta will usually get along well enough, but a male betta and a male dwarf gourami will pick on each other until they die. The reason for this is because the dwarf gouramis are actually within the same family as betta splendens, and it sparks the "fight for territory" response in both.

In reality, while dwarf gouramis generally make a good tank mate with many different kinds of fish, male bettas really do not. Their flowing fins make them slow and the other fish think they look tastey, plus the betta is always trying to fight rather than hide.

  2. Generally no.

I'm sure someone will have done it, but because the fish are closely related the betta usually mistakes the gourami for another betta and carnage ensues.
