a friend of a friend bought a 250r but it will not idle. He constantly has to rev it to keep the motor running. I was interested in buying the 450r but I'm a little discuraged because of the 250r. I was planning on riding it in the woods. I am an experienced rider (currently ride a modified crf 230f) but I needed to know Does the 450r do the same thing? Thanks.

  1. ALL properly tuned motorcycles (including modern two strokes) will idle easily once they're warmed up.

The only time this isn't true is on a very high compression engine that's got a really high lift cam profile, this will give the engine a very lumpy idle, which can stall if you're not careful with the throttle/clutch action.

  2. Is the "250R" you are referring to a "CR" model or another "CRF" model? I have own both 2-cycle, and 4-cyles bikes. The 2-cycles are notorious for not wanting to idle. This is sometimes due to setting the idle while the engine is cold, and idling, but then after warming up it idles at a much higher rpm. If the 250R is a fellow 4-cycle...  then the solution could be as easy as turning the idle s***w a 1/8 clockwise. Or maybe a clogged air filter, or other fuel problem.

  3. they should all idle by them self's once warmed up. your friend has a problem with HIS bike.

  4. a 450 will idle very easily. If that 250 is a 2 stroke that would explain why it doesnt want to idle. 2 Strokes are very tempremental, much like a women, if it doens twant to idle it wont. Sorry to all the women i just offended.....:)

  5. For future reference, always give year, make, engine size and model # when, asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.

Sometimes the year can make a difference.

The 250 & 450 each have idle screws, so of course they both idle.

Either your friend doesn't know how to read his owners manual, or his bike needs repair.

  6. A CRF450R is a great bike, you'll love it! And yes they do idle, they are very well behaved as a matter of fact.

The reason many two strokes do not idle is because people stuff aroun with the carburettors and mess up the settings, or someone sets it so it will not idle on purpose, to try and prevent glazing the cylinder walls.

That is a big pile of bull, and if you were so worried, wouldn't you just switch it iff when you didn't want it to idle, rather than making it a pain in the butt?
