Will a MLI effect a Smog Pass?

I am in need of a smog for my registration renewal and my Malfunction Light Indicator (MLI) is on due to a thermostat issue. I am curious if this will effect my car to pass smog.

  1. It depends on the state. Contact the agency that administers the smog checks and ask them. If you have an AutoZone auto parts store in your area they will reset the light for free or you can buy your own OBDII tool for around $50 at a Harbor Freight or similar store. I own one for my VW and it's paid for itself many times over, especially with the dealer charging $90 just to plug theirs in!

  3. I doubt if it will affect your smog one little bit. But it may depend on where you live. I live in AZ. and if that light is on for ANY reason, brakes for example, or your power steering pump is broken you are not even allowed to take the test. Of course they don't tell you that until after you have paid them and guess what? NO REFUNDS. Our wonderful State Legislature is supposed to fix that little problem and make the test tail pipe emissions only.. But so far they are dragging their feet. The way it is now they can charge you twice. I would make a call or two just to find out.
