I'm about to graduate, and I don't know what area of study in grad school will help me most.

My future goal is to design and build residental homes from scratch, then maybe sell them for some profit, but I don't want to just manage or just construct, I want to do both - Be the owner, designer, and the builder, subcontracting as I need.

basically, what sort of a graduate program should I be looking at to not only be able to manage the building of a residential house, but also the building science behind it and design of it.

  1. Short answer - Nope.

  2. If you are in the US, then just pick architecture. It doesn't sound like you have the background science/engineering needed to do the framing design. And with some simple buildings you can get away with just an architect.

To do what you want from an engineering side you need 6+ years of experience before you can get your license. You can usually knock off 4-5 years of that if you graduate from an accredited university. In addition, you have to pass 2 tests, one when you are getting out of school, the EIT or FE, and then the licensing exam after the 6 years. I am not sure about the architect career path, but I do know you have to pass a test after x years of experience. And the architectural and engineering experience don't mix.
