Question:

Will a TV turn on even if the horizontal output transistor is bad, or will this keep it from powering on?

I've got a RCA model# F32672SB, that was squealing, and won't turn on. After some internet reaserch, I found out that if I cut the center pin on the horizontal output transister, the sqealing would stop, and prove that the transistor was bad. This is exactly what happened, but the TV still won't turn on. I want to simply replace the transistor, but if this is the only problem, will it turn on again after I replace it? I'm not sure if I want to put any other work into it than this. I know that the fact that it won't turn on could be a host of things.

  1. It's the flyback.  Never had one with just a bad HOT (these Rcas that is)  Usually caused by a bad connection on a coil directly off the center leg of the HOT

  2. The squeal you heard was the high voltage trying to come up for the picture tube. (about 27k volts-be careful) It sounds like you may have a bad flyback transformer ($50-$150) and possibly the driver transistor for the horizontal output.(small transistor near the H.O.T.)  Also, after replacing the horizontal output, check for high voltage arcing on the lead going to the picture tube - you should see it clearly with the back off the set in low light if that's the problem. If there's arcing, you can buy high voltage putty to seal it.

I have seen sets that will have sound and no video and others that simply will not come up with H.O.T. problems.

    Good luck!
