Question:

Will a VGA-to-Composite connection on my TV be high-res or low-res?

I just got a laptop with both S-Video and VGA output. I'd like to hook it up to my TV for websurfing. My TV has composite (RCA) and S-Video inputs, but nothing higher (no HD). I connected the laptop to the TV using S-Video, but the resolution dropped to a very low-res. I've seen VGA-to-RCA or VGA-to-SVideo converter cables, so what would happen if I bought one and connected the laptop to the TV that way? Will it remain high-res or drop to the same low-res?

  1. Composite and S-video can only support standard def.

  2. Neither will be a very good resolution. S-Video is probably better than composite although they both only support 478 (or so) horizontal lines; standard definition. Compared to about 768 from most 15" screen laptops or even more depending on the laptop screen.

    Hope this helps!

    Nick.
